Turning Grief Into Something You Can Hold — Custom Memorial Sweatshirts Now Available
After my Mommom passed away, I found myself clinging to anything that reminded me of her. She was such a big part of my life and her passing felt like a piece of myself did as well. I wanted something that let me carry her memory with me — not just in my heart, but in something I could see, wear, and hold.
She had this old zip-up jacket that I was able to find. It was cozy, well-loved, and—like so many favorite pieces—it had a few worn spots. But Mommom, being the crafty soul she was, had actually sewn butterfly patches onto the jacket to cover a few holes on the zip up. That was just like her — resourceful, creative, and always adding her own special touch.
When I decided to make a remembrance sweatshirt, I knew I had to use that part of the fabric — the piece with her butterflies. It felt like she had already added her love to it once, and now I was giving it a second life. I had enough fabric to make two versions. One with two hearts on the front (one representing me and the other her) and another with a heart appliquéd onto the left chest of a sweatshirt (right near my own heart). Then, I embroidered her name, a pair of angel wings with a halo, and the date she passed on the sleeve.
When I finished and put it on, it was like getting a hug from her. Comforting. Personal. Full of meaning. Instead of the zip up sitting in my closet (as it was a piece I rarely wore but never wanted to give up), I could now repurpose it and turn it into something I wear all the time!
That moment inspired me to open up this offering to others.
